EEG Testing

In-Office EEG Testing for Epilepsy, Seizures, Blackouts, and Neurological Disorders

Din Neurology provides comprehensive in-office EEG testing for patients throughout Dallas, Richardson, Plano, Garland, Frisco, Allen, McKinney, and surrounding communities.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a safe, painless, and highly valuable neurological test used to evaluate brain electrical activity. EEG testing plays a critical role in diagnosing epilepsy, seizure disorders, staring spells, unexplained loss of consciousness, and other neurological conditions.

What Is an EEG?

An Electroencephalogram (EEG) records the electrical activity generated by the brain.

Small electrodes placed on the scalp detect brain wave patterns that are analyzed by a neurologist.

EEG testing helps identify abnormal electrical activity that may be associated with:

  • Epilepsy
  • Seizure disorders
  • Staring spells
  • Blackouts
  • Altered awareness
  • Certain neurological conditions

Why Would a Neurologist Order an EEG?

EEG testing may be recommended if you experience:

  • First-time seizures
  • Recurrent seizures
  • Staring spells
  • Sudden confusion
  • Unexplained blackouts
  • Fainting episodes
  • Abnormal movements
  • Loss of awareness

The test provides valuable information that can assist in diagnosis and treatment planning.

Types of EEG Testing We Perform

Routine EEG

A routine EEG is the most common EEG study performed in a neurology office.

The test typically lasts 20 to 40 minutes and records brain wave activity while the patient is awake and relaxed.

Routine EEG often includes:

  • Hyperventilation
  • Photic stimulation (flashing lights)
  • Relaxation periods

Sleep-Deprived EEG

Some seizure abnormalities become more visible when a patient is sleep deprived.

Patients may be instructed to reduce sleep prior to testing.

Sleep-deprived EEG studies are frequently used when routine EEG results are normal but seizures remain suspected.

Extended EEG

Extended EEG recordings provide longer monitoring periods than standard EEG studies.

Longer recordings may improve the likelihood of detecting abnormal brain activity.

Ambulatory EEG

Ambulatory EEG allows brain wave monitoring over an extended period while patients continue their normal activities.

Benefits include:

  • Recording events that occur outside the office
  • Evaluating infrequent seizures
  • Monitoring for 24–72 hours or longer
  • Increased diagnostic yield

What Happens During an EEG?

During your EEG appointment:

  1. Small electrodes are applied to the scalp.
  2. Brain wave activity is recorded.
  3. You may be asked to breathe deeply.
  4. Flashing lights may be used.
  5. The neurologist interprets the results.

EEG testing is painless and non-invasive.

EEG and Epilepsy Diagnosis

EEG is one of the most important diagnostic tools used in epilepsy care.

The test helps neurologists:

  • Identify seizure-related brain activity
  • Classify seizure types
  • Guide treatment decisions
  • Monitor treatment effectiveness

While a normal EEG does not completely exclude epilepsy, EEG findings often provide valuable diagnostic information.
